 [FP] DELL

Seems Vista only, but if it ran SMP LINUX,
the OS is not a big concern.

$499

This link in CHEAP without OS if LINUX were used ... $380

EDIT: Closer to DELL when 800Mhz RAM is selected.
DELL, you get a OS to boot (pun intended )

My opinion is that we should stay away from "cheap." We've been there, done that. I like the Dell warranty and I like getting an OS which makes the box legal for all operators, so they can be passed around when necessary.

I have to admit that I rather cringe at the word "cheap"... some of our cheap equipment ended up more expensive than we might have liked in the long run.

The advantage of the Dell Windows boxes is pretty clear in my mind, even though I am not personally a primary Windows user...

Just my opinion, but I see a strong advantage in equipment that is under warranty and can be easily used by any FP member who might wish to be an operator.

If an op wished to run linux, they certainly could, but it saves the grief of trying to get a legitimate Windows OS on-board later on if needed...

Looks like that deal expires early tomorrow morning and it looks like GarG needs to:

1. Click that link
2. Click the first of two links to get to the quads
3. Click the processor option to choose the Q6600 CPU
4. Click the OS icon and choose Vista Business for $100 more.
5. Click the memory icon and choose 3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 DIMMs [add $10 or $1/month1]
6. Total is $609 before shipping.

If #2 doesn't work (like it didn't for me), then he could just go there directly ---> »configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/···G4&s=dhs

$509 with Vista Home Premium, yes, but that is a very incomplete (crippled) OS.

Add Vista Business (see step 4 in my post above,) which is the minimum I would suggest, and you add another $100 to uncripple it.

If GarG really prefers XP Pro, he may be able to call them about this offer and convince them to load XP Pro if he pays for Vista and still get the $609 price. Some companies are willing to do that because MS licensing lets you downgrade the OS under the Vista license. I don't think the OEMs can sell XP anymore. You have to buy the Vista license if you want to run a Microsoft OS.

It looks like Dell has updated their deals today. I can't find anything that resembles the prices that we were working with except for the link that I provided above.

Link repeated here: »www.dell.com/content/products/fe···en&s=dhs

This deal expires @ 5:59 AM CT on 8/1 - that's tomorrow morning.

I really wonder if they are trying to get people to bite on this offer knowing that a better offer will be available soon.

I think that it would be a safe wager that they soon will have something similar.

I get $599 with the new link, Howie. The 800MHz RAM is included in the price and he just needs to upgrade to Vista Business and buy. Or, if he prefers, $20 more for Ultimate. It isn't clear to me the advantage of going with Ultimate, but that is what I have here.

The original links seem to be outdated now.

However, these two still seem to work. Not sure if they will still honor an order from them though.

»configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/···G4&s=dhs

»configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/···d=566643

The latest link to the 530 is more expensive. :/ Starts at 549 now. Add $140 for the Q6600, $100 for Vista Business, and $50 to go from 2GB to the 3 GB that was in the original deal. Total would now be $839 before shipping.

New "Deal": »ud.ed10.net/r/VDZG1C/KEJSE/PRF7S···01844610

EDIT: That one seems to come with a 19" monitor.

This is with no monitor, and you can downgrade from the 500GB HDD, to a 250GB HDD. Brings it down to $729.00 before shipping. $679 with 2GIG RAM instead of 3GIG.

530 No Monitor: »configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/···pndt_530

NAH! Start out here: »www.dell.com/content/topics/prom···k=anavml

Then click on "Back to School Desktops starting at $499."

Next click on the E-Value Code for "InspironTM 530 Desktop $230 Off Instantly!"

You should now be able to configure a quad core for $499 - no monitor - this a current promotion and no, I don't work for Dell.

 Re: [FP] DELL

At work, I have a Guardian Dental plan ...
And you ask "what has that to do with the price of tea in China?"

It seems my plan allows "up to 40% off select Dell products"

I will call Dell some time to see what this applies to.
Maybe it is not Inspirions ... or maybe it is?
Maybe others have discount ins to Dell also?
