| a2 cores and Linux SMP client Rock!
I just have to share this.
Foldy owns two (2) quad systems that are running the 6.02 SMP client (mine and usa2k's). This week, the quads finally began receiving work units that utilize the processing power of the quad. I've been watching them get an average of 4400 points / day or better. The same WU will get approximately 1/2 of that on a Conroe C2d processor.
The a2 core is only available to Linux SMP clients.
Now, if Foldy only had a few more of these crunching beasts! -- Hello, my name is Bill and I'm a crunchaholic...

| That's tremendous. Maybe I should reformat Foldy4 and install Linux. Or dual boot.
I will get around to looking at the Stanford site, but being lazy, I wonder if anyone knows if the a2 core will eventually be available on Windows SMP? --

| I believe Stanford/Pande hopes to release a solid SMP client for windows. Reading between the lines, it seems it's a much more difficult task, with many, many point release candidates and problems in the Fora over there. -- Hello, my name is Bill and I'm a crunchaholic...

| reply to sortofageek I agree.
A second HDD with a Linux install would be an ideal solution. Such as was done with F2-14 and F3-07,
Just leave the original HDD as is, unplug it, and use a second HDD for the Linux install. That leaves the warranty intact for the Dell, if service is ever required. As well, as the original OS intact if ever needed by another OP. |

More seriously, I just disconnected the HD and used a diskless boot of LINUX, but then parkut kindly sent me a Hard Drive with CentOS Linux installed.
A separate drive keeps everything all safe. The Windows OS has never been booted.
Another thought, if Garg were to order that blade he will order .... If he were stuck with Vista, parkut , or usa2k could swap entire computers, so he gets XP (If he needs XP).

| I agree with everyone else... shocker, that!
We have a lot of great ops, IMO the most knowledgeable that we have had in a very long time. As far as hardware configuration goes, prolly parkut can make a blade do about anything possible, and everyone seems to have some unique skill to add to the mix and round it out.
I do agree with the warranty concerns, however. Jim has bypassed the HDD and parkut never had Windows in the first place. Iff'in we want to run the other guys as linux boxen, we likely need to do something similar.
Or, learn to play chess on that board that MB posted.

IIRC, Bill does have the original HDD that was shipped with his system. I believe it has Windows XP Pro on it. He just never booted into it. He started by adding a second HDD, installed CentOS on it, and installed the SMP client on it.
Unfortunately, it was stuck getting the A1 work units. It took some time, multiple e-mails to Dr. Kasson, and some digging around, but we finally got that situation figured out and fixed.
As he started getting the A2 cores, well you can see his excitement from posting this thread.
I am stuck running Windows on the Quad. And that nets only approx 1484 PPD with the SMP client. :/ As it doesn't use the full capacity of the Quad, I also added two Uniprocessor clients, and depending on the set of WU's that I receive, it now nets between 2000 and 2500PPD. Still a far cry form the 4000+ PPD that it was getting the month that I was able to run Ubuntu 8.04 when I first got it.

| Thanks.
I realized that Bill had everything that originally shipped with the system... I just didn't phrase that too clearly, I guess.
I have no Windows SMP boxen in the immediate future, I do not believe. I have the two big Mac Pros, and a couple of PS3's available as soon as I get the last of Hurricane Hanna out of the cellar. Electrical outlets are at a premium at the moment.
I just added a new GPU to the dual Xeon XPP server, so I will give a shot at the new GPU client too, I guess.
I am not gonna' even take a shot at those chess boards... -- "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crispy and good with catsup." |

ATI, or nVidia?
ATI - more stable client, less PPD.
nVidia - not as stable, more PPD. |

| Excellent choice.
nVidia is having recent quality control issues.
I had several of the high end nVidia cards several years ago. None of them lasted over 8 months. The last was a $400.00 gForce 4, and it was sent as an RMA to replace a $300.00 gForce3. The 3 lasted between 6 to 8 months, the 4 less than 4 months. I still have it here, never bothered to have it replaced. Nor, have I ever bothered to purchase another vid card since. My gaming days behind me, I never could justify a fancy vid card.
The GPU client changes that somewhat, but I am still not convinced that it is the best bang for the buck. If I ever do get a vid card, It will most certainly not be an nVidia card. |
