| [TWC] FREE AOL for RoadRunner users
Ok, I know I'll catch alot of heat from this with everyone bashing AOL. But I just wanted to give fellow RoadRunner users a heads up on it.
Time Warner is now offering all their RoadRunner users FREE AOL.
1)To use AOL you MUST first call your local TimeWarner/RoadRunner office and setup your account for AOL. 2)Then goto »www.rr.com/getaol and download the installer file. 3)Find the file you downloaded and double click it to download/install AOL. 4)After its done.. Just sign in with the username/password provided to you from TimeWarner/Roadrunner. 5)Thats it... Start using AOL!
OK.. While I agree AOL isn't the best ISP to use.. RoadRunner is... And knowing alot of people using AOL is why I thought I'd try it (Being FREE helped lol). My local TW/RR office was all confused as to where to get the software from (they just started offering it this weekend).. is why I included the instructions on how to get it.. Hope it helps ya.. CYA!!
P.S. AOL does not take over your internet... You can still use RoadRunner as usual with AOL closed |

| How long from your call to Time Warner did your AOL account become active? Is your username for AOL the same as RR? And is that a special version of AOL.. in other words if the AOL client was pre-installed on your comp. can you just use the custom settings and make it work over your current connection.. I don't use AOL and never would install it but my mom has RR in her house and would like to use AOL I am sure. |

Do you have to install the AOL software, or can you just use the username/password they give you with a "bring your own connection"? -- Microwave and RF Components at www.ohiomicrowave.com |

I called 713-335-3278 and they kept transferring me around and then said that its the same price but they have to switch the service over, or something like that. I am calling the AOL number now to see if they can do anything. |

I saw the ad on TV saturday night and called them that night and got to use it today (monday).
"Is your username for AOL the same as RR?"
No.. RoadRunner selected a MASTER user name for me.. you can then add up to 7 more user names
"And is that a special version of AOL.."
I had to download it.. it is.. America Online 9.0 Security Edition SE powered by Road Runner High Speed Online
"Do you have to install the AOL software, or can you just use the username/password they give you with a "bring your own connection"?"
Yes you have to install a special version of their AOL software

Sorry to hear that.. but I had a little run around too.. Mostly on where and how to get the software... This offering is new.. It just started this weekend 7/23/05 Good luck! |

| reply to Cyrick8 I'm curious to know how this applies to current AOL subscribers. I have both RR and AOL right now... Had AOL since the early 90's and switched to their "bring your own ISP" plan ($14.95/mo) when we went to SBC DSL in 2000. Now I've switched to RR a few months ago and still pay for the AOL...

Russ Well now you'll be saving $14.95 a month.. I am not sure what they do with exsisting users.. They did ask me like 3 times if I was an exsisting user.. which I wasnt (so I wouldnt know sorry).
To the other people wondering: Let me clear this up for the others that are still confused..
If you have roadrunner.. you can now use AOL for free after following the steps above.. No AOL doesn't take over your connection and require you to start-up and/or use their software in anyway. Yes you still keep your roadrunner email address. Think of it as AIM. Use it when you want.. Close it when you don't. Roadrunner will still work the same as it always has.. |

Hi lilmoonee..
Have they (TW/RR) signed you up for your account yet? Guessing from what you stated they have.. I am guessing they have different setups for different areas.. Mine was like you stated above.. but my Time Warner account only has nine digits and they used the first 7.. Try your first.. then last 7 digits.. If that don't work... you'll have to call them back up .. When I signed up.. the CSR that signed me up.. mis-typed my last initial. Luckly when I called to tell them that I couldn't sign on.. My next CSR actually had a clue and quickly figured it out. I kept her on the phone as I enter the username/password to make sure it worked.. which it did. good luck! |

| reply to Cyrick8 We ordered new service yesterday that will be installed in our new home on 8/21. The salesperson asked if we wanted AOL also. I asked him if I could still get RR e mail addresses and he replied that we sure could (the usual 5 total) and that AOL was now included at no extra charge. (We are getting the $29.95 a month deal for a year) When the installer comes to our home on 8/21, he will have a user name and password with him for our AOL account also. What the heck, for no extra money, we will play around with AOL for a bit .... |

| reply to Cyrick8 I got it activated here in Hawaii after being on hold for over an hour for customer service and then another 40 minutes for tier 3 tech. At least, when I did get to her, she knew what to do. She said Oceanic is not advertising this yet because AOL didn't send anyone out here until July 13 which was the national launch date and Oceanic didn't see how they could launch on the very day AOL finally got here to teach about it. She said the tier 3 techs for RR are still not trained so it will be awhile before Oceanic advertises this. But for those who see national ads or see a thread like this and call then they will activate the account. She said lots of the 30,000 AOL dial up members in Hawaii have been calling about it.
Anyhow, my user name is my first and last initials and 12 numbers. I don't know if the numbers are from my RR account or not as that information is not on my monthly bill. The password is TWC plus my zipcode.
Something I didn't like right away. AOL silently installs an AOL toolbar on your standalone IE!! That ticked me off. You can uninstall it (which I did right away) but I don't think that should be installed on my standalone IE without asking me first. I had to reboot the computer after uninstalling it also so that the files it took away could be put back. This is the kind shennanigans that makes so many cringe when AOL is mentioned. It is a shame they are still pulling this stuff.
AOL also installed and put in the systray Quicktime. Here again they should have asked me. I detest Quicktime and have never had it on this box. Now I have to go uninstall it.
I wanted AOL mostly for the radio. It has all the Netscape radio stations. I can't get the radio to open and the help file is frozen. Ugh. I thought by now AOL would have cleaned up all the mess of their earlier versions. I know AOL quite well as I was a beta tester for them for versions 5, 6 and tried to beta test 7 for broadband but AOL never got it set up. I also tested a bunch of other stuff for them back then. I had 7.0 very briefly, never had 8 or 9 until now.
I also got an error message at the end of the install saying that AOL can't be run at DPI 120 and was told the text would be too large and I had to change it to standard DPI. I thought that was weird. I have a 19" flat panel digital LCD monitor at 1280x1024 resolution so I wondered how the text and icons were going to be "too large" with my 120dpi which I use because everything is too small on 96dpi. It turned out that everything looks totally normal on AOL at 120dpi so I have no idea what that was about. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. | reply to Cyrick8 I called AOL direct and they were much more helpful. The rep explained that it's a two month "trial" but then your AOL account becomes merged with your RR account and you still receive it free. My username is the first two letters of my first name, the first two letters of my last name, and a number. My password is random. -- "Comparing information and knowledge is like asking whether the fatness of a pig is more or less green than the designated hitter rule."-- David Guaspari |

| The tier 3 tech told me that no one is expected to use this account. It just for getting on AOL and then we set up the accounts we want with the passwords we want. I mean TWC plus the zipcode is not much of a password! Besides, who would want to type their initials, plus 12 numbers, every time they sign on?
Did AOL tell you that if you ever leave RR that you must first call AOL and cancel the AOL contract? The tier 3 tech explained to me that if you don't do that, you will get billed by AOL for AOL dialup. So, there is no merging of RR and AOL accounts. You should have called TW not AOL. AOL never knows anything about anything. The only AOL people that have a decent amount of knowledge are the beta techs. It really pays to beta test for AOL as you will get good support that way. (Of course, you need a test computer for that as beta testing for AOL is guaranteed to wreck your computer). Regular support and customer service really stink. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. | reply to Cyrick8 TW was clueless, RoadRunner Tech Support clueless! AOL customer service rep stefanie helped me out. I was on hold for a good hour going thru department after department, she basically took control and called up RR and we went thru each tech support rep until we got a tier 3 tech lol was funny.
if you're having problems demand to speak with the new mexico office of customer help. btw AOL has a ton of content, not bad. -- Let's fix our problems in the USA, before we go trying to fix others. |
